Safety-First Front Porch Handrail

Front porch with decorative brick border in Holiday, showing area where custom safety handrail will be installed

The Request

K.B. called about her parents' front porch in Holiday. No handrail, and she wanted to get ahead of the problem before it became a bigger deal. Smart thinking — these things are easier to handle before someone takes a fall.

The challenge is the decorative brick border running around the porch edge. It's part of the home's character, something you don't want to drill through or damage. But it also means we need to get creative with where the posts go.

Our Approach

We're designing a railing that works with the brick, not against it. The posts will be positioned to avoid the decorative border entirely, and the railing will follow the natural line of the steps without looking like an afterthought.

This needs to meet code requirements — proper height, graspable rail, solid construction. But it also needs to look like it belongs there, not like safety equipment bolted on later.

Next Steps

Once the design is finalized, we'll fabricate everything in our shop and powder-coat it black to match the home's trim. Installation will take some careful measuring, but that's what it takes when you're preserving the existing look while adding something new.

The Goal

K.B.'s parents will have a solid handrail they can count on. The brick border stays untouched, the porch will still look like it always has, and there'll be one less thing to worry about when they head out to get the mail.

This is exactly the kind of job I like — a daughter taking care of her parents before something happens, a real challenge that requires doing it right, and at the end of the day, someone's parents get to walk up their front porch with confidence instead of worry.
