The Challenge

The homeowner had a new basement egress window installed but was left with an open concrete well right off the backyard—a safety hazard, especially with kids or guests walking near the house. Building code required a protective railing, but they didn't want the typical generic metal bars that would clash with their home's modern brick exterior and black window frames.

The added complexity: the well also needed stair access to the basement, so the railing couldn't just wrap the perimeter—it had to incorporate a functional entry point while still looking intentional and cohesive.

The Solution

We designed a custom railing with a geometric pattern that echoes mid-century modern aesthetics—vertical lines with staggered rectangular accents that add architectural interest without overwhelming the space. The design complements the home's clean lines and brick texture.

The stair section integrates seamlessly, with a matching handrail that follows the descent into the well. All posts are surface-mounted to the concrete ledge for a clean installation, and the entire piece was powder-coated satin black to tie in with the existing window frames and hardware.
